Child Labor Laws:

14 & 15 Year Olds (Including Home-Schooled)

Work Hours

Not before 7 AM or after 7 PM during the school year
Not during school hours

Maximum Hours When School is in Session

18 Hours per week
3 Hours per day on school days, including Fridays
No more than 6 consecutive days

Maximum Hours When School is NOT in Session

40 Hours per week
8 Hours per day
No more than 6 consecutive days

 

16 & 17 Year Olds (Including Home-Schooled)

Work Hours

Not before 7 AM on a school day
Not before 5 AM on a non-school day
Not after 10 PM the night before a school day
Not after Midnight on a day that does not precede a school day


Maximum Hours When School is in Session

20 Hours per week
28 Hours in a week with unscheduled school closure (such as snow days)
4 Hours per day on school days
8 Hours per day on the last day of a school week or an unscheduled school closure day
No more than 6 consecutive days

Maximum Hours When School is NOT in Session

50 Hours per week
10 Hours per day
No more than 6 consecutive days

Who needs a work permit?

If you are under 16, you must have a work permit.  Generally the Superintendent's Office. Check with your local school department about where to get a permit.
If a 16 or 17 year old student has dropped out of school and is no longer an enrolled student.  The work hours are the same as adult work hours, whether officially emancipated by a court of law or not.
